Dog shaking after eating coffee grounds: Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 1 month old | 30 lbs

My dog got into garbage today and ate 3 pieces of nutella pizza as well as multiple other pieces of pizza crust, coffee grounds and whatever else was in there. Now it's bedtime and she's shaking a bit almost like she's cold. I covered her with a blanket but is still shaking a bit...front shoulders and back right leg...both like every 10 seconds for 2-3 seconds....when she's up moving around she's fome...i think this just started around 9pm

While I doubt there is enough chocolate in Nutella pizza to cause toxicity, coffee grounds can be toxic if enough are ingested. Muscle tremors can be a sign of caffeine toxicity, so if the shaking continues or Dora has also vomited or if she seems agitated I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Shaking could also be a sign of nausea or stomach pain.
