Dark line on cat's gums: Is it gingivitis? How to improve gum health?

My cat has a dark line in his gums above the back teeth, is this a sign of gingivitis? His diet is nature variety pride tuna formula and orijen kibbles as occasional treats and I weekly rub cet virbac beef flavored toothpaste with my finger because using a brush freaks him out.
