Why did the shelter cat from a hoarder act scared and run away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I was petting a cat at the shelter, she had come from a hoarder and when I put her she turned away from me (her back then was facing me) I kept petting her then she got up and sat down right in front of me and just stared at me. Her tail wasnt moving her eyes were huge I didnt understand what was happening but I have been attacked by a cat before so I started to get scared. I watched her from a far and she just ran away. Did I do something wrong? Does she have a problem?

It does not sound as though you did anything wrong or to scare the cat. Many cats are fearful of strangers or people in general. You didn't have to necessarily do anything to scare her, it may have just been that you were an unfamiliar face. What sometimes helps acclimatize cats to people they do not know is a product called feliway. This is a pheromone product that can reduce stress in cats and help with anxiety. You could wipe your clothes down with the feliway product and see if that helps prevent the cat from running away on you. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
