Why is my senior cat leaving dark spots and poop where she sleeps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14.5 lbs

I have a female cat that's between 9 & 11(?) She was adopted. I've had her myself for at least 7 years. I've noticed over the weekend the she's leaving dark spots where she lays. Sometimes almost black-grayish poop is left behind also. She hasn't been doing it since early Sunday but very concerned about what's might be going on.

It sounds like Sassy might be a bit incontinent which could be a sign of a UTI, or even a problem with arthritis (involving spinal nerves that help control the muscles that help hold in the urine/feces. It is also possible that she is so relaxed when she sleeps that all the muscles relax extensively to the point that she is not holding in her eliminations. I suggest you take her to your vet for a general exam to rule out a urinary tract infection or arthritis. If the veterinarian cannot find anything wrong with her he may be able to prescribe a medication that helps with the control of the respective muscles.
