Why is my 10-year-old cat sick, lethargic, not eating, eye goop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 16 lbs

My cat is sick today. He moved from the bed to the couch befor I got up. Had goop in the corners of his eyes, and was not interested in eating. Also listless and did not jump up to the sink in the bathroom today, as he does each morning. He looks sad & tired in his eyes. I’ve not seen this before. He will be 10 next month. Indoor cat.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Gimli evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These clinical signs are fairly non-specific and can be observed with many conditions. Diseases that can cause weakness, lethargy and inappetence include pancreatitis, foreign body ingestion and obstruction (though vomiting is usually also noted), gastroenteritis, infections, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Hopeful evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include bloodwork and abdominal imaging. Therapy would be based on findings. Good luck!
