This definitely looks infected, but usually the infection is caused by something. Mites are a potential cause. Other common causes are foreign-bodies (i.e. grass) in the ear canal, or excessive moisture in the ear canal. It's best to have a vet evaluate him, because they can help identify the cause and discover what infections are present. It looks bad enough that it will need prescription medication, so it will be well worth the visit to a vet. In the meantime, you can flush the ear (can get ear flush at the pet store) once a day. This will help to clean out all of the brown discharge. There are some good videos on YouTube that give good tutorials on how to properly do this. I hope that helps and Jumbo Jack gets better soon.

This build up in Marley's ears isn't normal, and it usually a sign of an ear infection. It could be that he is suffering from ear mites, but ear infections can also be caused by bacteria or yeast. He sounds very uncomfortable, so my advice is to take him into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can examine the debris in his ears to determine what is causing this itching, and can prescribe a treatment for him. It's very important to have him see as soon as possible to get the correct diagnosis and treatment as leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss. Call the vet in the morning for an appointment.
