My dog ate rat poison after birth. Can she still nurse her puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 36.8 lbs

My dog just recently ate rat poison and she also gave birth to her young a few weeks ago. She gave birth first before she ate the poison. Must she nurse her baby?

Ingestion of rat poison can be deadly, so I recommend taking Burger to the vet immediately for treatment to keep her from having life-threatening complications. It's ideal for the puppies to nurse off of Mom, but not necessary. There are milk-replacers for dogs available in the pet store. Below is a link to an article that explains how to feed them and care for them when mom is not around. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/puppy-orphaned I hope that helps and all is well with Burger and the pups.
