Why is my older dog suddenly lazy, losing hair, and eating more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 30 lbs

Our border collie cross will be 13 in April. She has always been lazy, but lately she’s been more lazy, she’s losing hair in clumps on her hips and has been eating more than usual without gaining any weight. She has a history of breast cancer. I am worried.

Hair loss and increased appetite are common causes of an endocrine disorder called Cushings disease. This is a common problem in older dogs and they usually are drinking more water then normal as well. I would highly encourage you to consider having Diamon evaluated by a veterinarian soon. They may recommend blood work to help determine the diagnosis. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
