My dog has a UTI. Are her symptoms from the infection or amoxicillin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog had dark urine, very little urine output, lethargic, and no appetite. She was seen at the vet Wednesday and they said she had a uti. Are her symptoms of a uti or could it be from the amoxicillin they put her on

Amoxicillin usually does not cause dogs to become lethargic or have decreased urine output. It can sometimes cause a decrease in appetite. The symptoms you described seem typical of a UTI. Other differentials would be kidney disease or dehydration from not drinking. If Suzy is not improving on the Amoxicillin, I recommend that you take her back to the vet and have them do a full urinalysis with culture and possibly bloodwork to make sure her kidneys are functioning properly. They should also check her hydration status and administer fluids if needed. Sometimes I have to put dogs on a different antibiotic like Bactrim to get rid or their UTI. Or the UTI is due to a yeast and they need an antifungal agent to treat it. Your veterinarian can switch her meds if needed. The urine culture will tell you what drugs the infection is sensitive to. I hope this has helped. Thank you for using pet coach.

This is not good. Make sure she drinks a lot and if she still pees blood or bloody urine, take her back to the vet for a recheck. She may need some pain medicine and glucosaminoglycanes to help the lining of the bladder heal.
