Will my black dog's hair grow back black after a fungal infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 60 lbs

Question: I have a pure black German Shepherd 6 month old puppy and when he was about 5 months he got what seemed to be fungus on his right paw and lost about 2 inches of hair so I started to apply this fungus cream called ketoconazole. And now one month later in that patch of hair that he lost he grew pure white hair instead of black. Will the white hair fall out and black come in or should I shave that patch of white hair that grew in and hope it comes back in black? What should I do please he

Unfortunateely this sometimes happens with a fungal infection. the fungus likely had destroyed the hair roots in which the pigment is that makes the skin and hair growing from it black. There is a chance that during the nexr shed of your dog , it comes in black, but there is also a chance that it will stay white. That is the way fungi can damage skin. There is no medication to remedy that.
