My guinea pig has strange ear skin and eye injury. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 21 days old | 2 lbs

A week ago I bought a new guinea pig and I realised her ear looked strange - it looks like a dead skin, but I'm not so sure. Also, you can see there is some type of injury near her eye. Can you give me some advice of what to do? Should I take her to the vet?

I am so sorry for the delay in answering your question. Mites are very common in guinea pigs and may be the cause. Take her to your vet so they can determine if this is indeed the problem, and can advise you on how best to treat it. In the meantime, change the bedding daily and monitor her food and water intake--if she is lethargic, or is not eating or drinking, take her to the vet right away. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, and again I apologize for the delay!
