Is cow's milk safe for my puppy? Does it cause stomach upset or worms?

Can I give cow milk to my puppy of 2months age?. Will it lead to increased worm condition?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, cow's milk should not be given to puppies or dogs as it can cause gastrointestinal upset. Feeding cow milk will not have any effect on intestinal worms. If you suspect your puppy has intestinal worms, your puppy will need to be dewormed with an the appropriate deworming medication from your veterinarian. I hope this helps!

No, cows milk is generally not recommended as dogs do not have the necessary means to digest the fats and sugars and it commonly causes diarrhea. A balanced, large breed puppy food should not need any additional supplementation and is designed to be fed with water

Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Great question! No, giving milk to dogs will not give them worms. Keep in mind though, once dogs are no longer puppies, most of them lose the ability to properly digest/breakdown dairy products so it is not really recommended that you give them milk. She does not need milk and it can cause stomach upset in some puppies with vomiting and diarrhea. Just feed her a high quality puppy food and that should be adequate nutrition for her. She should see a vet for deworming and vaccines so schedule an appointment with a vet in your area.

Cow's milk is not good for dogs and can actually cause gas, constipation, and an upset stomach.
I would withhold food (he can have water) for the next 6-8 hours and then try feeding Dexter a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) for a couple days. If you find he is still vomiting and having diarrhea, he may need to see his veterinarian. He could have a bacterial or viral infection or even parasites that could cause similar symptoms.

I fed some stray puppies, about 6-7 of them. They were kinda hungry/starving for days. I gave them some milk. Would the sudden excessive intake of milk do any damage to them ?
I would recommend feeding puppy milk replacement not just milk. If you gave milk then the puppies can get diarrhea which can dehydrate them. If you gave puppy milk replacer it is a good thing that will give them nutrients they need. Puppy stools can have a wide range of normal. Changes are often due to what they are eating or intestinal parasites. Cow's milk is not appropriate for puppies, you need to go to a pet store and get puppy milk replacer. The spots on his belly look normal in the picture, but they could also be caused by insect bites or puppy pyoderma, which often resolves on its own. A vet examination can tell you what is going on for sure. The vet can also test for intestinal parasites that aren't treated with over the counter dewormers, like pyrantel. I would discontinue the medications you are giving. My toy poodle was never weaned from her mom. I got her at 3 months and have given her milk ever since. She likes milk and it seems to calm her stomach. Can this be so based on the negative comments about milk and dogs?
Most dogs do not tolerate cows milk. As they get older they do not have the proper enzymes to digest the lactose in the milk. I do know of some people who give their dogs milk and never have any problems. Baby girl does need a regimen of regular dog food though to ensure she is getting all the proper nutrients. If Babygirl commonly has an upset stomach the milk could actually be the problem. If she commonly has problems with her stomach, I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn’t something else going on like intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. Your vet will be able to talk to you in detail about her diet and the amount of milk she is receiving and whether taking off the milk will actually be more beneficial for her and her tummy. Cow milk is not recommended as it may lead to gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhea). An appropriate puppy milk replacer, such as Esbilac or Pet-Lac, is recommended in place of cow milk. Warmed milk is also recommended to prevent chill. A puppy likely will refuse cold milk of any kind unless very hungry.

Can puppies 2 weeks of age drink whole milk, if their mother can not be found?
This is a good question, and I really wish the answer was yes. Unfortunately puppies and kittens can't drink cows milk. They need a formula solution that can be found at your local pet store or Veterinarian. The milk we drink can cause upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea and can't be safely substituted for mothers milk.

Around 4 weeks of age, you can begin to introduce soft puppy food (canned or moistened kibble) into the their diets in addition to their puppy milk replacer, such as Esbilac. Dogs of any age should not be given cow's milk, as most are lactose intolerant and can develop vomiting and diarrhea.
