My puppy has hair loss and scabs on her tail. Is it from antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 19 days old | 38 lbs

My puppy has lost some hair on her tail and it’s scabby at the end shouldn’t I be worried about it or could it be because she’s been in antibiotics for diarrhoea

Antibiotics for diarrhea would not cause Coco's tail to lose hair and be scabby. This could be due to fleas, a skin infections, allergies, or mites to name a few causes. This is something that should be seen by a vet, and the vet can diagnose the cause as well as treat her for it. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It could be from fleas, a skin infection, allergies, mites, or an anal gland problem. Have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution.
