My dog ate Dulcolax. Is it safe and what should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 2 days old | 8 lbs

Teddy consumed 1 x 5mg ducolax at around 7:15am. He’s in otherwise good health, had a normal BM at 8am, and is eating/drinking/playing as usual. Besides impending loose stools, is there anything else I should be concerned about?

Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) is often used as a laxative for dogs, so there should be no problem other than soft stool, maybe some loose stool. Side effects such as cramps, nausea and diarrhea are common, especially if your dog takes other medications. However these should pass relatively quickly. If those side effects appear severe, have your veterinarian examine your dog and make sure there is not another problem lurking.
