Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs
My dog has started having bouts of bloody diarrhea but no vomiting. She ate out of our trash can last night. She has had about 3 episodes of diarrhea bit her stool is changing from liquidy to more distinguished and solid. She is still eating and drinking water and is for the most part her normal self. Right now, the diarrhea is her only symptom and she is having less and less blood in her stool with each movement. What should I do next since my vet is not open?

Prescous' diarrhea is probably due to eating something that did not agree with her (trash)and this likely caused colitis, The problem here is that her stool is bloody and because of that would require a course of antibiotics to prevent the bacteria that live in the digestive tract to enter the blood stream. I would fast her for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. She should also be seen by your vet, preferably tomorrow for an exam and a prescription of antibiotics.

Poor Maya! I would consider trying to stick to one brand as changing of the foods can also cause loose stools. You may consider a bland homemade diet of like lean ground turkey and rice and green beans to see if this settles her stomach. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken if you think she can tolerate it. If so, you can slowly transition her to the food you think is best. The other option is to always make her food but you want to make sure it is a balanced diet. You can visit www.balanceit.com for recipe options. Finally, if this doesn't help I would consider having your vet take a look at her feces. They will look for bacterial imbalance and intestinal parasites. If everything seems normal, I would ask to make sure they checked for giardia and campylobacter. These are two parasites/bacteria that are harder to find but can cause problems. Finally, I would consider putting her on a probiotic daily since this has been a chronic issue. See link below for suggestions. I hope this helps! https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetri-science-laboratories-vetri-probiotic-everyday-bite-sized-dog-chews

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Because of the possibility of this being related to a food sensitivity, you can try to feed her a sensitive stomach commercial diet to see is this improves. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Baby evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Rule out intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. If the soft stool is chronic, consider endoscopy to evaluate the gut and to get some biopsies. This may diagnose IBD or other inflammatory process. Feed a good quality diet that is low in fat. Increased fiber may help. Discuss a fiber supplement as well as probiotic use with your vet. You can also add 1 teaspoon per 10lbs body weight of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to the diet once or twice daily. Food allergies/sensitivities should also be ruled out.
