My dog is bleeding and licking after heat. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed

I have a chocolate lab named Nestle, and she is not fixed. She is between 14 and 16 in human years. I’m not sure exactly how old she is. She went into heat as usual around the middle of July. She stopped bleeding 2 weeks ago. About 3 days ago, I noticed that she was licking herself a lot more than usual. Then I saw that she was bleeding a reddish, clear liquid. She doesn’t usually do this after she is in heat, so i looked it up and she might have an infection. Is it her age or anything serious?

She may be in heat still (up to three weeks after stopping bleeding) or indeed she may have a uterine infection. Nestle will need to be seen by a veterinarian for a hands-on exam. If the vet suspects an infection he will want to verify this with an ultrasound exam or an x-ray. A uterine infection can be life threatening and the best treatment would be surgery to remove it and its purulent content. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian now.
