Why is my dog having eye boogers, diarrhea, and sleeping more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 100 lbs

My sweet pooch recently has been having constant eye boogers for the past two weeks and diarrhea a couple times a day. Her humor and energy is relatively normal but she is sleeping a lot more than normal.

Diarrhea (and throwing up) can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Harley Jade for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrheaor if she gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Hi and thanks for posting! While clear colored eye "boogers" can be normal in dogs, yellow or green eye discharge is not and can be a sign of an eye infection. Diarrhea can have a variety of causes in dogs- bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, recent changes in food or the addition of new treats can be a cause as well among other more serious causes such as organ issues. You can try adding 1/4 cup of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food twice a day to help firm up her stool, however, if Harley Jade is still having diarrhea,and/or the eye discharge, I would recommend she see her veterinarian for further work up and evaluation. I hope this helps!
