Will a cold or Zithromax affect my 4-week puppy's development?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 4 days old | 1lb

I have a 4 weeks puppy that I will be picking up on Sept 14. The breeder just informed me that the puppy had a cold and was on Zithromax. I'm wondering if a cold at that age or the course of treatment would have any developmental concerns or potential side effects?

Hello. I would be a little concerned as to why a puppy this young could come down with a cold. The immunity a puppy gets from its mother usually remains very high until it begins to wane around 8 weeks of age. That is why we start puppy vaccinations at this time. My best advice is to have the puppy examined within a day or so of you obtaining possession. I am not concerned about the Zithromax as this is usually well tolerated, but I would like you to make sure the puppy's heart & lungs sound normal. If everything checks out fine, then the respiratory infection should have no impact on the overall health & growth of your puppy. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
