Why does my puppy pee when I pet her? Is it submissive urination?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 3 days old | 35 lbs

For some reason, my puppy (German Shepard, husky, lab - mom/golden retriever, boxer - dad) will squat and pee whenever someone goes to pet her. She was previously in a puppy mill sort of situation and I don't believe got much attention. She stayed in a small chicken cage with all her littermates. We've had her for about 2 months and she seems otherwise happy. She's also taken out to potty multiple times a day. She's very smart also. What could be the reason for the urinating when pet?

It sounds like this could be submissive urination. It is a sign that Eclispe might be a little nervous or excited about you reaching down to pet her. Submissive urination is common in puppies and they often grow out of it as they age. When you’re petting Eclipse you should get down to her level and try to let her come to you - it’s important for you to not act too excited.
