Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

I am on disability only a 1000.00pr month .I have a 10year old 17lb male mainecoon cat. I had to pay 1700,00 already just to tell me from x-rays that his r back leg has a torn ligament .I was told without surgery the scar tissue may help after awhile but sometimes seems like he is an 80year old man. Is there any otc med that can help ,in tears!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It depends on which ligament was torn. However, in general, I would agree with your veterinarian that scar tissue may form and help stabilize the leg over time. Again it is hard to know without knowing which ligament we are referring to. However, there are medications that can help with comfort such as meloxicam. This medication can affect the kidneys and can only be given if his kidneys are being closely monitored and they are ok to begin with. You can check with your veterinarian who knows his medical history to see if this seems like an option for him. Good luck and have a great day!
