My dog barks. How to handle public judgment while training her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 66 lbs

How do you deal with people constantly judging you and your dog. She barks at other dogs and rareley people. We are training her and making progress. Slowly but surely. But seeing people's disgusted faces, hiding their kids behind them etc makes me feel terrible. Some even stare directly in her eyes and of course it triggers her. I'm really antisocial and I don't feel like telling them that I'm training her unless asked or told something. She's just doing her job as guard dog.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I see your point. Honestly, you are doing the right thing here by training her and getting her the help she needs to improve so there is really no need to feel bad about this. You are being a good owner and you are doing it right. I think if anything, I would tell them that you are working on it and walk away. Clearly you are the one right here. Keep up the good work! Good luck and have a great day!
