My old dog has itchy ears, feet, and bad odor. Are allergies to blame?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 6 months old

Our family dog is quite old, she is a lab/ golden retriever mix. She has issues with her ears. Very itchy and black spots. Her feet also bother her especially during the summer. Both have a bad odor even after baths. We did research and changed her diet. We use sensitive dog soaps on her and nothing seems to work. In the past vets prescribed ear drops but never seemed to work. What could help her?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. It is possible that allergies are to blame for her ongoing skin disease especially if her problems are somewhat seasonal. There are two great new allergy medications used to control itching and licking. They are both very effective. Typically if the itching can be controlled and medication such as an antibiotic can be used to treat any secondary infection, the skin will heal. This will take away the odor. The two medications I used most commonly for environmental allergies are Apoquel and Cytopoint. It is important to rule out other allergies such as fleas and diet. She may need a prescription diet trial. I hope this information helps!
