My puppy's third eyelid tore, a piece is hanging. Does it bother her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 5 months old | 44 lbs

My puppy got attacked by a cat around 2 months ago and her third eyelid got torn. We took her to the vet and the eye was okay so they only gave us antibiotic cream and it seems to have healed well. However there is a little piece of the third eyelid that is "hanging" away(as seen in the picture). Do you think it bothers her? Should she get it trimmed or should we leave it? She shows no signs of discomfort.

Unless it gets inflamed or starts irritating her eye, I would just keep watch on it. You might ask your vet to look at it the next time she is in for her annual exam and ask their opinion. It doesn't look like something worth anesthetizing her for alone, so unless she is getting another procedure at the same time, your vet may not think it's necessary to repair unless it starts to cause problems.

Pictures would help but most wounds will heal by themselves eventually. I would be concerned if the third eyelid has parted in two that it may not be well aligned during healing and may become crooked. Review by a specialist ophthalmologist or surgeon should be considered to determine if repair is warranted or possible
