My dog died suddenly after dark bleeding in heat. Was it pyometra?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 11 years old | 49 lbs

My 11 yr old golden retriever/chow mix had gone into her heat cycle. She had some really dark, almost black blood down her hair skirt. (She ALWAYS had very heavy bleeding during her cycle from day one) This time she was showing some signs of pain in her hip/back legs region. My vet gave her something for pain but the next day...she had only taken one pain pill...I went out about 9:00 am to give her the next one and found her dead. Blood from her mouth, had an apparent seizure. WHY?

First off, I'm so very sorry you lost Ginger suddenly! How awful for you. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain but maybe it was a pyometra. It could she wasn't in heat, she was suffering from an infection of her uterus, and that would cause a heavy discharge and pain. If the uterus ruptures, it can lead to sepsis and death. Unfortunately a pyometra is fatal without treatment. You can ask your vet to do a necropsy (an autopsy for animals), which may give you some answers. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
