What causes a 3-month-old Corgi puppy to cough and gag at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 4 days old | 9 lbs

Our 3 Month old Corgi the last 3 days has been coughing and gagging in her kennel at night, she does it some during the day when she is napping on the couch with us. She prefers to sleep on the hard floor. Not sure if its the soft bed/couch causing the problem or something else. She has gone from sleeping though the night to waking up gagging every 3 hours. Any suggestions? She still eats like always, has energy to play but does like to sleep a lot.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Coughing in such a young dog could be due to an infection such as kennel cough. In this case, antibiotics are indicated as that can help if there is an infection present. There are other less common causes in a young dog such as heart disease, pneumonia, among others. I recommend that you have Grace evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
