Why is my senior cat gaining weight and licking his hindquarters?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My 12+ year old cat goes crazy when he even hears the word “vet.” The last time I took him in, they had to sedate him (first two shots did nothing, so they “boxed” him. He literally ripped the vet tech‘s nose open (ER & stitches for her). $600+ dollars later, they couldn’t find anything wrong. Now he’s gaining weight and snaps his head back to lick himself when I brush him near his back leg/tail. Is this worrisome? He’s eating, drinking, and eliminating normally. Meds: gabapentin up to 200mg prn

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This would not necessarily be concerning. If he has been gaining weight, you could consider a diet for weight loss such as the hills science diet metabolic weight loss management diet which works great for weight loss. Good luck and have a good day!
