Is my cat's fur loss from ringworm ointment normal or concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 months and 25 days old

I’ve been giving my cat ointment for her ringworm. When I started, her fur was only thinning in the effected area. Now she has no fur there. Is this a negative reaction to the ointment or just a side effect that shows it’s working? Before and after picture attached

While it may clear up in a week or so, it’s not uncommon to be a bit of a longer battle for some, and sometimes difficult to clear. I would recommend that you take her back to the vet to have them re-evaluate. Medicated baths and/or oral medication may be helpful. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Hair loss is normal and expected with ringworm. Keep using the ointment until the hair starts to grow back, which may take several weeks or even months. You may want to talk to your vet about using an oral antifungal in addition to the ointment.
