My cat's jaw clicks, drools, and licks lips. Is it a dental issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 11 months and 25 days old

My cats jaw is clicking/moving up and down and he’s drooling a little which has a slight odour. He’s licking his lips and swallowing (as he would after finishing a meal for example). This isn’t constant, just every now and again but he’s been doing it for the past few days. He seems fine in himself and is still eating /napping as usual. Is this a dental problem?

It sounds like you need to make an appointment for Sonny with the vet. Its not urgent if he is still eating and drinking and seems to be acting fine, but I would be concerned that he may have a fractured tooth or some similar oral problem. Make an appointment when you can, and it may help keep him comfortable to offer soft food rather than hard food until your vet can take a look. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Hi there and thank you for your post! With what you are describing, I would think either behavioral or that something is going on inside his mouth or with the jaw itself. I would have your vet take a look at him to figure out the cause. If something is wrong with his mouth or jaw, your vet may want to take some x-rays of his head to make sure there are no major concerns. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
