My Shih Tzu is lethargic and whimpering after anal sac cleaning. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 months and 20 days old | 12 lbs

Hi, my 8 month old shih tzu was active and playful last weekend then on Monday he was just laying around not his usual self. I noticed he hadn't pooped all day and was dragging his butt, so I took him to the vet on Tuesday and they cleaned out his anal sacs. Since then he has been laying around again, he eats and drinks but just does not want to play or run. He does whimper at times when I pick him up.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be showing signs of pain or discomfort. For that reason, it would be best to have Max reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Since he has not improved, they could potentially look for any evidence of pain or discomfort by doing an examination. Good luck and have a good night!
