My senior cats are losing weight, fighting, and soiling. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I have 2 female house cats, both around 16 years old. They are from the same litter and have always been together. One has always been small and the other quite fat. They have both lost a lot of weight recently and started hissing at each other and soiling around the house. The fatter one is now quite thin and is often sick, possibly because she is over grooming and has licked her stomach bald. Do you think it’s time to euthanise one or both? I can’t afford huge vet bills and have no insuran

It sounds like both are experiencing illness if they are losing a lot of weight, and common diseases in older cats are diabetes, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, and cancer. They definitely need to see a vet as soon as possible. If you can't afford huge vet bills, then I would discuss with the vet letting them go peacefully. I would take them into a vet right away. Best of luck.
