Why is my cat hissing at her 3-month-old kittens? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5.5 lbs

I just got back from holiday today after a month and happened to find my cat and her kittens (which are over 3 months old now-theyre street cats). But I just saw that my cat hisses and hits her kittens if they show affection to her or go near her. Why is this? What can I do to prevent it as I will be taking care of all three?

Isabella has decided that the kittens are now ready to live on their own. She believes that she has taught them everything they need to know as a cat to survive. So now it is time to separate ways. You will not be able to keep her from doing this. You may want to take the mother in or the kittens in and separate them that way so that neither mama and kittens will be too stressed. You can also do nothing and let mama do her thing. Eventually they may get along again once the kittens have been successfully weaned from mama.
