Can dogs get West Nile virus from mosquito bites? What are symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 100 lbs

Hello, me and my dog Rosco live in a woodsie area and the city recently found West Nile in our area. Rosco does get bite by mosquitos and horse flies frequently. However, I am concerned for his safety. The city will be spraying the area in a few days though. Can dogs get this? If so what are some symptoms?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It is possible for dogs to contract West Nile Virus (WNV) but they typically do not develop symptoms and it does not appear to cause any overt clinical symptoms in dogs, or cats for that matter. Lethargy, decreased appetite and fever are among some of the symptoms that can be seen with WNV infection. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
