My dog has a hairless scab on his elbow. Is it a normal callus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 35 lbs

I recently noticed a scab on my dog's elbow. It's about one inches long and half a inch wide. There's no redness or pain but that little patch has no hair, just a scab. Any ideas what it might be? He's had ticks twice about three or four months ago. Both times were about a two weeks apart. He couldn't have had them for longer then 12 hours. Dont know if that makes a difference.

This is a callus. No need to worry. Usually happens when they lay on hard surfaces. Completely normal. If they become red or irritated then I recommend a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
