My senior dog has pancreatitis and is declining. What's her prognosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 12 years and 10 months old | 145 lbs

My 12 yr old boxer has pancreatitis, anemia, elevated liver enzymes, elevated BUN, extreme thirst and nighttime incontinence. She is of an age where invasive surgery is not an option. It could be due to a tumor, or could be a bout of extreme pancreatitis. She has always been in great health, but has suddenly taken this turn. My question is, what is an older dogs prognosis if just treating the pancreatitis? She is already underweight, and declining quickly.

It really depends on how severe the pancreatitis is to say what the prognosis would be. With her being weak and older she would benefit most from intense treatment. You really have to look at her quality of life when deciding on how aggressive you want to treat. I would discuss this with your veterinarian what would be the best option for Aiko.
