My cat has kidney disease. Would medication help his condition?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | RagaMuffin | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 8.8 lbs

Hi, my cat has kidney disease along with a urine infection. He has taken antibiotics for the infection and we have had a 2nd urine sample. This has just come back as being fine. The Vet however hasn't advised for him to take any medication to help with his kidney disease which I'm a little concerned about. I am struggling to feed him the kidney diet food and am only using a phosphorus binder. Do you think it would help if he was on some type of medication? Thanks.

There is no medication that specifically treats chronic kidney disease. Changing to a therapeutic diet and increasing water consumption can help, and treatment is focused mainly on alleviating clinical signs like nausea or decreased appetite. High blood pressure can occur secondary to kidney disease and if Percy had high blood pressure then a medication might be prescribed. Urinary tract infections are also pretty common in cats with kidney disease so your vet may want to check Percy’s urine periodically.
