My senior indoor cat is coughing. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

Hi..I have a 13yo cat. Indoors. He is coughing, not like a hairball cough. He is also licking my hand when I rub across the area on the lower spine. He has dander, so I brush him daily. I am concerned about the cough, he's a terror to take to a vet. Any advise?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Coughing can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Wolfgang evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck and have a good night!
