Hello. With kidney disease, it is important to try to increase fluid intake. If he is not on a canned diet, I would try to transition him to one. Even better, would be a canned kidney diet such as Hill's k/d. Once he is eating the canned food, adding a little water will help, but you do not want to add so much water as to decrease the nutritional density of the food. Creatinine and BUN are the two main kidney values measured with blood chemistry panels. Yes, it is very common to track changes in these values (as well as many others, including electrolytes) during IV fluid therapy, particularly if they were high to begin with. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Renal failure is mainly treated with IV fluids, this is NOT poison and is very needed. Go to the vet that recommended IV fluids and put him on fluids. Also, if he has acute kidney disease compared to chronic kidney disease the treatment will vary. If his potassium level is very high, then he has an obstruction (blockage) either in his urethra, or in his ureters, and this requires treatment to get the potassium down, but also to relieve the obstruction- usually either by placing a urinary catheter or surgery if it is a ureteral obstruction. I strongly recommend IV fluids, and checking his potassium. If it is high, you need to look for the obstruction and fix it. If there is no obstruction and the potassium is high, the only way to get it down is with fluids (even when they contain small volumes of potassium, you need the overall dilution effect and to get the kidneys making pee). If a dog has heart problems and is unable to utilize the volume of fluids that is given, those fluids can end up in the lungs and cause an increase in breathing. This is most common with large amounts of fluids given IV quickly, but can occur with SubQ fluids. However, it takes time to develop, so it would have occured a number of hours after fluids were given - not immediately after. And when Memi was hospitalized, the IV fluids should have made her worse, not better. The most likely explanation is that the breathing was due to her kidney disease, and the fluids were coincidentally given at the same time. I would recommend that you have Nica evaluated by a vet as soon as possible. A respiratory rate of 60/minute is much higher than normal. Some dogs with heart issues don't tolerate extra fluids. It is a constant battle for us to manage dogs with both heart and kidney disease. Nica may need x-rays to see if there is fluid in her lungs or oxygen therapy if she isn't oxygenating well.

You do not need to supplement with Pedialyte as this also has electrolytes which are typically not well regulated with kidney diseases. Ensuring there are adequate quantities of water bowls may be sufficient. Depending on Memi's degree of kidney diseases and you comfort level, your veterinarian may recommend that you administer fluids under his skin on a daily basis. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Unfortunately, once kidney damage shows up on blood tests, this damage cannot be healed anymore. The only thing you can do is to slow down further kidney deterioration. This is best done with supportive care by your vet (fluids, phosphor binders and other medications your vet may prescribe as well as a kidney diet. A kidney diet is very highly recommended. Your vet can prescribe the proper diet.
