Kitten sneezed while weaning. Did formula get into his lungs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | 1 month and 15 days old | 0.1 lbs

I’m in the process of weaning my 5 week old kittens and when the first kitten started lapping from the swallow bowl of formula he started sneezing. I quickly got him away from the bowl but I wasn’t able to see any milk if there was any. He’s not super sleepy and he’s usually the most energetic at all times, I’m concerned the formula could have gotten into his lungs?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Toby should be fine! It is normal for the their noses to get in to the food/fluid when they are learning to drink and eat from a bowl. Either the formula tickled his nose or he sucked a little in to his nose. Sneezing is the natural way to remove the milk. I wouldn't worry too much! Good luck with everything!
