My dog has congestion, heaving, backward sneezing. Can Benadryl help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 2 months old

Tot is having issues with congestion in her face. She will wake up me start heaving and backwards sneezing. It sounds very moist and "snotty" Went to an ER vet last week who did not think it is related to her heart disease. Her o2 blood level was good and heart rate normal at the time. Lungs were good. It stopped but is back very bad tonight. Would something like benadryl help her? She takes Enalapril, Vetmedin, and Lasix.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tater-Tot. While she could be experiencing seasonal allergies, an upper respiratory tract infection is more likely given the congestion and nasal discharge. I suspect she will need antibiotic therapy to start. I am glad that you have already determined that it is not related to her heart disease as that is always the concern. If her symptoms do not improve with antibiotics or her condition worsens, then x-rays of her chest will be needed. I do not think that Benadryl will significantly improve her symptoms. hope this information helps!
