What fence height is needed to separate a stallion and mare?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Is this type of fencing good enough to keep a stallion away from a mare? This isn’t my fence I got the pic online as I was to lazy to walk out and take a pic but my fence is similar to this I don’t want my mare getting pregnant but I also don’t want my freinds stallion to starve as the grass from his feild dried up and withered away

If that is 48", it is not enough. A minimum of 5 foot fencing (6 feet from ground level is preferred) would be recommended. Some hot tape or hot wire would also be recommended to help keep them away. Watch your mare for signs of heat. They can be just as bad, or worse, than stallions when it comes to breeding. You may need to move her to a different paddock or keep her in the barn temporarily.
