My cat has a lump on its tail with brown discharge. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

There is mass like lesion at the base of our cats tail about 0.5cm in diameter with no progression in size but has light brown discharges. What can we do? Do we have to be worried about?

This looks most like a sebaceous cyst which is a benign cyst that can rupture or get infected from time to time. However, there are other things that this could be that are not benign. Just to be safe, I’d see the vet for a better examination. He or she may recommend a cytology (poking the mass with a slim needle and looking at the cells under the microscope) to determine if it needs to be removed or just monitored. Best wishes to you and Mamush!
