My senior poodle is itching. What can I give him besides Benadryl?

Hi My dog is 13 yrs old and has a terrible itching problem. He is a poodle. What do you recommend for my poor doggie. His vet here in Laredo told me to give him Benadryl 20 mg daily. Is there anything else I can give my baby. I bathe him once a week with a meticated shampoo for itching and hot spot. Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs
