My dog has red skin around his mouth. What's wrong and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old

My dog is red around his mouth. It’s come up in the last 24 hours and he definitely hasn’t eaten anything red. Should I be worried?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This could be a contact dermatitis or sensitivity. This is especially likely if Russell had started using a plastic food or water bowl in the last month. If so, switch back to ceramic or steel. There are also auto-immune diseases and allergies that can affect this area. If there is no improvement in one week or if worsening in any way, please see your vet for a closer examination and possible treatment options. Best wishes to you and Russell.

It looks like Russell's skin is irritated, and this could be from allergies. It could also be that he has a skin infection. I wouldn't be overly worried about it, but it is something that should be checked out by a vet. Give his vet a call to make an appointment to have this examined, diagnosed, and treated. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
