My dog's paw is swollen after injury. Is it fractured or broken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cane Corso | Male | unneutered | | 58 lbs

My dogs right front paw was grazed by a slow moving vehicle. The knuckle area is swollen. But there are no protruding bones. He still has an appetite and is otherwise ok. It was lightly bleeding so i applied neosporin and gauze. How will i know if this is fractured?

Hello, sorry to hear about Royalty. It is actually. difficult to know if he has any fractures without an x-ray of the foot and wrist. However, signs of a fracture will include non-weight bearing lameness on that leg, pain, persistent swelling, and severe bruising. If he is walking on the leg comfortably, it would be less likely that he has a fracture. But if you think he is having the above mentioned sings, the recommended next step is to have his veterinarian seen him so that he can have an x-ray. Hope this helps and best of luck.

He may have fractured a bone in his paw. If he seems painful, have him examined at the nearest veterinary ER tonight. They can do x-rays and administer pain management. If he is resting comfortably, you can take him to your veterinarian tomorrow morning for the same treatment. Restrict his activity for the rest of the night. No running, jumping or rough play.
