Is untreated babesia life-threatening for my dog with no symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 2 years and 8 months old

If he would be left untreated with b.gibsoni and babesia canis then can it be life threatening or lead to failure of organs and sudden death? Because right now he is not showing illness sign or anything and vet said it will go automatically

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If your Vet said it might go away then it is possible that he could clear it. He likely won't die suddenly. If the infection worsens he will ACT sick first. If Danny is doing well and you are willing to watch and wait then recheck blood work in 3-6 months. Good luck!
