My Shih Tzu had bloody anal sac burst. Is frequent draining common?

My shih tzu was in vet clinic earlier today. There's blood everywhere this morning when we woke up. The doctor said his anal sac exploded or something, but he's okay now. He said we just have to drain it every 2 weeks from now on. Is this common? Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male
