Why does my puppy eat his poop at night and how can I stop it?

My 70 days old GSD sometimes eat his poop at night. Please help me on how to stop him from doing this.

Unfortunately it is a normal behavior for dogs to eat their feces. For a puppy this age, it is best to work on potty training so that he doesn’t have the opportunity to eat feces. Make sure to take him it after eating dinner and again before going to bed so that he has plenty of opportunities to eliminate outside. You may need to get up in the middle of the night for a couple weeks, as well.

    She may not be able to control it and hold it through the night. IF her diet changed or she is eating something new for a treat this can also contribute. I would look at your schedule and see when she eats. You may need to feed her earlier in the day so she has to before bed instead of the middle of the night to help.

This is called coprophagia. Here is a link to an article about this issue. Often times puppies will outgrow this behavior. If he is defecating in the house, he needs to be crate trained, or walked outside long enough that he defecates before bed. Crate training is important to establish housetraining. I would start researching training methods or reach out to a trainer.

Unfortunately, poop-eating is a fairly common behavior among dogs. The best way to resolve it is to pick up the feces immediately after the dogs do their business. There is a product called Forbid, which is sprinkled on the dogs' food, that makes the poop taste bad, but as soon as you stop using it the problem will very likely come back. Do not scold Prince unless you actually see him doing it. He will not know why he is being reprimanded.

Why does puppy eat poop?
It's very common for puppies and adult dogs to eat poop. Most of the time, they just seem to enjoy the taste - it's not normally an indication of any illness or nutritional deficiency. The best way to prevent it is by picking up the poop before they have a chance to eat it, or by blocking their access to cat litter boxes or other places where they might find some.

I hv a Gsd puppy of 45 days. Feeding her royal canin starter since 3/4 days n curd. I hv noticed she at times eating her own poop. What can be the reason? Lack of calcium? Can I feed her milk?
She's cute! Eating poop (coprophagia) is actually very very common in dogs. Studies have been done looking for anything that might be missing from a dog's diet to make them develop this habit, and no link has been found - it seems some dogs simply like to do it! So, there is no concrete reason, and there's nothing you can change about her diet to make her stop. I would discourage you from giving milk, as it may cause diarrhea. There are products out there such as For-Bid that can be added to her food and make her stool taste bad, to help discourage the behavior. But it mostly comes down to simply cleaning up after her before she gets a chance to eat her stool. Hope this helps!

He is a puppy and they just tend to do these silly things. The best thing to do is to watch him closely and tell him no when he eats something inappropriate and give him a dog toy instead. You can also buy some for-bid powder to put on his food to help make his poop taste bad. It works on some dogs but not all to help break the habit of eating his own poop. I hope this helps!

My puppy of 10 weeks keeps eating his own poo. I'm trying to train him not to but he is ignoring the commands completely. Might it be medically connected? Is it normal and how can I teach him to stop. He is also dewormed last week.Please help
The next best step here is to make his poop taste bad. You can do this by purchasing a product called Forbid, which can be bought at your local pet store or online and give him that as instructed on the box for up to 2 weeks. You can also try 1 tsp of meat tenderizer added to his food daily. Most pets will grow out of this habit, but it is best to pick up the poop immediately after he defecates, and only leash walk him outside so that he does not have free range to eat feces. It's quite a common behavior, many dogs especially young one eat either their own poop or poop from other dogs. there are several supplements that help making the poo very bad to the taste, this helps in some cases, one example for such a product is called "Deter".

The best way to keep your dog from eating is stools is to pick them up right away. There is a product called Forbid, which you sprinkle on his food, that can help with this. As soon as you stop using using it though, he will probably go back to eating them.
