My puppy found a dead mouse. Is rabies a risk if she's not vaccinated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | White Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 11 days old | 50 lbs

My 6 month old german shepherd pup was in her kennel tonight and a dead mouse was in there with her. She must have killed it somehow, but her kennel was locked so I'm not sure how. She doesnt have her rabies shot because the vet said she was too young. Is there anything I need to look out for? Im worried about her.

Rabies vaccines are typically administered around 12 weeks old, so Koda is definitely old enough to get one if she is 6 months old. However, mice are not a typical carrier of rabies, so I would not be concerned about this disease. If she ate the mouse, it could possibly cause stomach upset, but since you found it this is unlikely.
