My guinea pig has a crusty, red, and bloody eye. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | 3 years and 7 months old | 2 lbs

My Guinea pig has developed this strange clear crusty thing in her eye. It covers most of her left eye, and the eye is bloody, and red behind it. She does not seem bothered by it, but it looks awful. She is eating, drinking as usual. I think it has made her blind. It came about very fast. Please see picture.

Sorry to see this has happened to poor Ellie. She requires immediate veterinary attention as this eye is badly infected and will be very painful. I suspect she has developed a bad corneal ulcer or there has been trauma to the eye. She needs to assessed by a veterinarian and appropriate treatment given. They may be unable to save the eye.

I see what you mean, Athena is probably suffering from an eye infection which is pretty common in guinea pigs, you will need to take her to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eye and will probably prescribe an antibiotic eye drops which should resolve the problem within a couple weeks.
