Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 11 lbs

Augie was sleeping and all of the sudden he started to gag like something was in his throat he was trying get it out but it’s not coming out. He was running on top of couch off and under chairs curling up.(odd) We took him outside he ate grass and he threw up the grass I only found grass and a little bit of his pebble food. Even after he threw up he still is doing the gagging. He did have a small piece of bread but either than that just his pebble. Nothing visible in throat. This is 1st time.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Auggie could have either some nausea or had something caught in his throat. Reasons a dog might vomit or retch (the gagging without producing anything) include eating something new/different, toxin, infection, organ disease, cancer, or other. If he’s just vomited once, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If Auggie has vomited several times, it’s time to head to the ER clinic. The veterinarian will do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays and/or bloodwork to help narrow down the cause of the vomiting. They can also treat the nausea and administer fluids for any dehydration that has occurred. Best wishes to you and Auggie!
